Inspired by the sounds of Anita O'Day, Chris Conner and Chet Baker, Sonya began singing at age 16. With years of musical training Sonya was set to begin, but followed a different calling, which led to an active career as a psychotherapist.
Now Sonya has come back to her first love: vocal jazz. As she describes it: “This love affair started many years ago and still lingers on. I love the sound of jazz tones and a lyric that tells a strong emotional story. I feel connected and soothed by it...” “Both performing and listening to jazz can be a healing experience”. Sonya's new EP, Bring My Lover Near, offers a unique selection of jazz standards and contemporary songs. Sonya is joined by a group of masterful jazz musicians who weave around and through her vocals resulting in a thoroughly integrated and enjoyable listening experience. Accompanied by Joe Scott, piano/keys; Tom Hubbard, bass; Jerome Jennings, drums/percussion; Josh Evans, trumpet and David Schnitter, saxophone. Sonya has performed at The Triad, NYC and has been heard singing in and around town at Butterfield8, LaBella's , Divino's, O'Neals' Red Bar, Nirvana in NYC; The Fox Hollow Inn, Murphy's Bar & Grill, Wickers Restaurant, Crescent Beach Club in Long Island, NY; Bert's Jazz Marketplace in Detroit; The Elephant Room and the Umlauf Sculpture Garden in Austin, TX. |
